Sports Premium Statement

Primary PE and Sport Premium is an initiative that aims to help increase and improve the PE and sporting opportunities for children. It was first provided in the 2013/14 academic year and the current government has pledged to continue this funding until 2020.

PE and Sport Premium funding is provided jointly by the Department for Education, the Department for Health and Culture and the Department for Media and Sport. It has been allocated to primary school headteachers and is ring-fenced, meaning that it can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.

Purpose of the funding

All schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but we have the freedom to choose the best way to spend the money on our pupils. At St John's we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of our children, and we believe that a varied PE curriculum and offering extra-curricular activities will have a positive influence on their contribution, behaviour and academic achievements.

Use of the Sports Premium

The money will be used so that all pupils can benefit regardless of their sporting ability. Some of the uses are as follows:

  • To employ a specialist PE teacher to work alongside staff for their professional development.
  • To pay for cover to enable staff to undertake additional training.
  • Provide a subsidy for those children taking part in after-school sports clubs.
  • To purchase new resources so pupils can learn new sports.
